{"id":1720,"date":"2015-07-04T23:21:16","date_gmt":"2015-07-04T23:21:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lapointes.ca\/blog\/?p=1720"},"modified":"2015-07-07T02:18:57","modified_gmt":"2015-07-07T02:18:57","slug":"covered-portage-cove-baie-fine-the-pool-on-the-hook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.lapointes.ca\/blog\/covered-portage-cove-baie-fine-the-pool-on-the-hook\/","title":{"rendered":"Covered Portage Cove &#8211; Baie Fine &#8220;The Pool&#8221; &#8211; (on the hook)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>No wifi and no data&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..now this is living.\u00a0 For the last couple days we have been incognito up here in north country.\u00a0 It is so prestine and unspoiled that it is disappointing when we go to a spot and another boater is there.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t they know we were coming???<\/p>\n<p>We left Covered Portage Cove by 7:30 only to stop about 5 minutes out of the cove\u00a0 because we didn\u2019t want to wake the other boaters with our gen running for breakfast.\u00a0 Scott was surprised that after 11 hours sitting the batteries were capable of turning over both engines.\u00a0 Just outside the cove we turned on the gen for the toaster and coffee and enjoyed the fresh air.\u00a0\u00a0 Then we\u00a0 made our way west to a fjord, sort of.\u00a0 It looks like a fjord and is the closest thing we will come to seeing one in Ontario.\u00a0 The Baie Fine, pronounced Bay Fin, is a 20 km or so trek up a pine tree lined, rock bluff valley into what is known as \u201cThe Pool\u201d.\u00a0 The Pool is merely a widening of the fjord where the water \u201cpools\u201d which is the end for most boaters even though the water continues up much farther through bog.\u00a0 \u201cThe Pool\u201d is considered one of the best places to be up here in North Channel.\u00a0 It had at least a half dozen boats there and we figured more were coming.\u00a0 We had some leftovers for lunch, and then started to head back down the waterway.\u00a0 We wanted to be alone with no boats around so we found a small carved out area and anchored there for the night.<\/p>\n<p>In The Pool there is a dock that leads to a path to climb up the bluff.\u00a0\u00a0 We took Low Voltage out of her sling and headed over to the dock. Its a great hike through tall pines, rock and foliage.\u00a0 At the top of the bluff you are awarded a beautiful view of a land locked lake.\u00a0 Lake Topaz has no fish, no algae and no vegetation.\u00a0 It is as virgin as a lake can be in these times.\u00a0 Aiden and Scott took the first dip into the fresh water.\u00a0 A bit nippy to swim in these parts this year but we won\u2019t be back for several years so we must partake.\u00a0 If you are coming north for vacation this year pack your warm clothes, wetsuits and lots of bug spray.\u00a0 The nasty bugger black flies are still out and they have made a meal out of us.\u00a0 Anyway Lake Topaz is higher in altitude than the Baie Fine so logically it should drain but it doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 It must have a very thick rock bottom where the water stays put.\u00a0 It is quite large and many a boater makes the climb up the bluff on a well marked path.\u00a0 However, marked very well it is not a climb that you will want to take if you are not fit enough to do so.\u00a0 Scott showed Aiden how to jump from the cliffs at Lake Topaz.\u00a0 So he started with a low 1 metre one and by the time we left was jumping off a 5 metre cliff, several times.\u00a0 He is growing up so fast now that he is 12.\u00a0 I reminded Scott that everything is 2 hours away and it may be a good idea to scale it back.\u00a0 Did they?\u00a0 Not those two!<\/p>\n<p>After a few hours at Lake Topaz we headed back to our resting spot for the night.\u00a0 We \u201cshowered\u201d at the back of the boat which was needed after a bug spray and sunscreen mix.\u00a0 Aiden has decided he is \u201csleeping out\u201d tonight so he has secured a spot in the back of the boat and is ready for the night howls and sounds.\u00a0 It has become the norm for the boys to head out fishing after dinner.\u00a0 I get to do the dishes and write.\u00a0 Not so bad when\u00a0 my office overlooks the beauty and calm of these waters&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;and we have run out of water in our holding tank.\u00a0 So that means boiling water for dishes and adding lake water to the toilets for flushing.\u00a0 Now we are really roughing it.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No wifi and no data&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..now this is living.\u00a0 For the last couple days we have been incognito up here in north country.\u00a0 It is so prestine and unspoiled that it is disappointing when we go to a spot and another boater is there.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t they know we were coming???
